What is a Realtor® and Consumer Guides for Real Estate

Whether you're a Buyer, Seller, or just someone looking to research purchasing and owning real estate, EMTAR can help provide you with useful information. You may ask, "What is a Realtor®?" A Realtor® is a type of licensed real estate professional who is also a member of the National Association of Realtors®, while a licensee is someone who is granted a real estate license. Adherence to NAR's Code of Ethics is a key requirement of a Realtors® membership which means that Realtors® hold themselves to a higher standard than just the requirements of the licensing body in the state of Tennessee known as the TN Real Estate Commission. The Code of Ethics are a set of guidelines that all Realtors® must follow. Those guidelines include a Realtors® duty to the profession, to their clients and customers, to the public and to other Realtors®.

Many Realtors® take advantage and maintain higher standards of education and development. Look for the designations after their names on their business cards, web site, social media channels, etc. to see if they have obtained and possess more knowledge than your average licensee. You can think of the designation(s) much like what you would see for Accountants. If you see an Accountant with the designation CPA, you know that accountant has obtained a higher skill set of knowledge than the average accountant. It's the same for Realtors®.
