C.E. Requirements

The content below pertains to maintaining your real estate license and Realtor® membership – continuing education (C.E.)

TREC requires licensees to complete 16 hours of state-approved continuing education (6 of which must be the mandatory “TREC Core Course”) every two-year licensing period, prior to the expiration date of your license. The remaining 10 hours must be state-approved elective courses. In addition, licensees must complete NAR’s biannual ethics course, which is required by the National Association of REALTORS®. The current Code of Ethics biennial cycle began on January 1, 2019 and ends on December 31, 2020.

TREC requires Brokers to complete 120 post-broker hours by the third-year anniversary of receiving their broker license, including the state-required TREC Core course and 16 hours of continuing education every two years thereafter.  (Brokers licensed prior to January 1, 2005 are exempt from continuing education requirements. However, the National Association of REALTORS® requires ALL REALTOR® members to complete an approved Code of Ethics class once every two-year cycle.  This requirement applies to all Brokers, Affiliate Brokers and Appraisers. The current Code of Ethics biennial cycle began on January 1, 2019 and ends on December 31, 2020.

Please contact TREC at 615-741-2273 with specific questions.

In Summary

Agents who must complete continuing education must take the TREC Core course and elective hours for a total of 16 hours. There are no substitutions for the TREC Core course. (Note: TREC Core is not the same as the Code of Ethics course.)

Code of Ethics is required of REALTOR® Membership and is required to be taken every two years.

Special Note:
Affiliate Brokers licensed before July 1, 1980 and Brokers licensed before January 1, 2005 are not required to take the TREC Core course.

Every Realtor® member agrees to abide by a strict national Code of Ethics that exemplifies the highest standards of the profession.
